AD Plant, West Malling

Having worked with the Process Provider, BioConstruct and Civil Engineering Contractor, Carty O’Brien on prior Anaerobic Digestion plant construction projects, Plandescil provided further Civil Engineering Consultant services for the facility located at the base of a quarry in West Malling, Kent. The food and green waste processing facility consisted of four secondary contained digesters and storage tanks, ancillary equipment and a reception building.

Plandescil carried out the Civil Engineering and Structural design for numerous elements, including the CIRIA C736 reinforced secondary containment bund, ancillary equipment foundations and surface water SuDS drainage design.

The facilities location at the base of a quarry presented limited options for discharging clean surface water run-off. Suitable percolation test results enabled the option of sustainable soakaway crate discharge to be used for discharging the reception building roof water, hardstanding area run-off after passing through a fuel and oil separator, and tested clean water from within the secondary containment bund structure. Discussions with Kent Count Council and the Environment Agency confirmed the approach taken to be most suited, given inherent site constraints. Drainage and design strategy reports were produced and provided to both authorities parties for approval prior to works commencement on-site.

CQA and environmental Regulation 61 compliance checks were conducted by Plandescil, to ensure all constructed elements conformed with CIRIA C736 and C759 requirements, where applicable
