Position available for September 2020 - Summer 2021

The Student Engineer will be working as part of a team providing civil and structural engineering design and advice to clients. An understanding of all the areas mentioned below is not expected, however flexibility is a key requirement. A willingness to undertake any activity to support the work of the Directors and Senior Engineers is required. Practical problem solving is a fundamental part of the service we deliver, and a key attribute of our potential employees.

The Student Engineer’s approach to clients must be to provide a simple solution at the minimum cost/best value. There is an expectation for a timely and expedient solution to a client’s situation.

STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING

Design

The Student Engineer may work as part of a team designing Structural Steelwork, Reinforced Concrete, Timber, Masonry and all types of Foundation. Structural detailing may be undertaken on occasions.

Buildings

The Student Engineer may work as part of a team undertaking all aspects of a project from planning procedures through to hand over.

Fieldwork

The Student Engineer may be required to assist with site work, inspecting and reporting problems on site, assist with measurement and structural inspection of buildings and Structural Surveys.

CIVIL ENGINEERING

Highway & Drainage

The Student Engineer may assist, as part of a team, in designing estate roads, highway improvement, maintenance schemes, surface and foul water drainage design and sewage treatment plants.

Site Management and Surveying

The Student Engineer may be required to assist with general site supervision, Setting Out, Site Surveying, Ground modelling.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT

For some clients Plandescil undertakes the complete design and project management of schemes. The Student Engineer may be involved in any aspect of this work as part of a team.

GENERAL

We are a busy office taking on over 1000 new projects each year. Some are half hour quick in and out jobs and others may last several years. We undertake a wide range of design in terms of size, complexity and location.

The Student Engineer may be involved in any of these activities to suite his/her ability and experience. The company works as a team with everybody working for and with everybody else, responsibilities are very much project related. Individuals may be working on several different projects in different teams at any time. The Student Engineer will be expected to work on their own initiative, but consult with other staff to ensure that the company values and ethos are upheld. The Student Engineer may also be requested to undertake Administrative tasks to contribute to the efficient running of the business.

The company believes in training and developing all staff to their full potential. In addition to ‘on the job’ and other training supplementary sessions are provided through weekly lunchtime training videos and product seminars. All technical staff are expected to attend these sessions.

The Student Engineer may be expected to undertake design and drafting/modelling work, both by hand and with computer programmes. While experience of specific computer programmes is not needed, general drafting/modelling ability and general/Microsoft computer literacy would be useful.
